Pulmonary Consultation

In order to see Dr. Haggag, your family physician or specialist will need to send our office a signed referral requesting pulmonary consultation. Once receiving the referral, we will contact you to schedule an appointment and provide you with special instructions prior to your appointment.

Dr. Maged Haggag is trained in providing care for patients with a broad range of pulmonary diseases. He will review your lung health and history, provide physical examination and pulmonary testing in order to diagnose and evaluate your lung health. All findings and concerns will be discussed thoroughly with you and a letter detailing your consult will be sent to your family doctor/referring physician.

We will schedule follow up appointments as needed.

Skin Prick Test/Skin Allergy Testing

Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT)

This is the gold standard for allergy testing. We insert a small amount of allergen into the skin and look for a localized reaction in that area (reddish, itchy, elevated bump). From here, we can evaluate what your allergic triggers are, and how severe the trigger is.

To evaluate your lung health, we will perform a Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) during your appointment. This test involves you performing a series of breathing exercises as a respiratory therapist guides you, so we can assess the flow of air in and out of your lungs/airways, as well as your lungs’ ability to take in the oxygen you breathe in.

This testing is a part of the consultation, however you may be referred to our clinic for testing only as well.

Methacholine Challenge Testing (MCT)

For the evaluation of asthma and it’s severity, we perform Methacholine Challenge Testing, sometimes known as bronchoprovocation testing. During this test, you will breathe in doses of a drug known as methacholine, which triggers controlled narrowing of the airways. From here, we evaluate the degree of reactivity by performing breathing tests. Your family doctor/specialist may refer you for a MCT upon seeing your Pulmonary Function Test.

Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) Testing

An Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) assess the amount of oxygen saturated in your blood cells. If your family physician feels you may have low oxygen levels (hypoxemia) you may be referred for a pulmonary consult as well as an ABG. For this procedure, a small amount of blood is taken from your radial artery on your wrist. The blood sample can be analyzed accurately within 2 minutes. This test is valuable in assessing the need for home oxygen, and is the gold standard for home oxygen funding qualification through Alberta Aids to Daily Living (AADL).

Level III Sleep Study Testing (HSAT)

For the evaluation of sleep apnea, we offer take-home sleep study testing known as Level III Sleep Study, or Home Sleep Apnea Testing (HSAT). These devices are small and easy to sleep with, and will detect interruptions in your sleep by analyzing your oxygen levels, chest movement and airflow sleep throughout the night. Once the data from the study is interpreted we have a team of sleep clinicians that can go over your results with you, and explore treatment options.
